Barbecue Bob and the Spareribs

The first Barbecue Bob & the Spareribs show took place in 1981, during a folk festival at Columbia University in New York City. Acoustic shows on the coffee house circuit followed, and after this brief phase, the band plugged in and started playing rock and blues bars such as Dan Lynch, mostly in and around New York City and Philadelphia, occasionally opening for national acts at the famous “Lone Star Cafe” in NYC. We played for over 27 years at the Rodeo Bar (27th & 3rd Ave.). The Spareribs have continued to make frequent appearances at clubs and festivals in the greater New York City/ New Jersey area, and have performed frequently at “Madam’s Organ” in Washington, D.C.

Robert Pomeroy – guitar/vocals/harmonica(rack & amplified) The “Bob” of Barbecue Bob and the Spareribs, has been leading the various lineups of the ribs for 30 years, keeping the sound vital, original, and hopefully more than one bargained for. He has also appeared on stage (as a sideman) with Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin and many more. In 2012, Bob was called to play harmonica on Joan Osborne’s Grammy-nominated blues album “Bring it on home”, also appearing on stage with Joan and the band on “Mountain Stage”, the Clearwater Festival, and other large theater venues.

Ira Spinrad – lead guitar/slide guitar Ira is the longest-serving sparerib, having played on many stages with Bob, ranging from large to non-existent.  He has been integral in the songwriting and selection over the years, appearing on 3 CD’s. He is a bandleader in his own right, as the vocalist/guitarist with “The Hammers”.
Tom Diello – Bass Guitar Tom is a long-time sparerib, having applied his fender bass talents to the band’s 7” DaDa singles as well as the “After School Special” CD. He has a long history in New Jersey punk rock and bar bands, and is a founding member of “Bad Karma”, “Whitey Five-0” and others.

David Lee Ross – Drums  Dave is also a long-time sparerib, having toured extensively with the spareribs throughout the South and Midwest as well as recording “Pass the Biscuits!” with the spareribs. He has a long history in New Jersey bars and Festivals, having played in “The Accelerators”,“Skinny John & the Sawbucks”, “The Cucumbers”, and  the “Voodudes”, among others.

“Go Down South”, the latest collection by the band, was recorded live at Excello studios in Brooklyn, N.Y. with the engineering and production skills of Hugh Pool. The 13 cuts (with 6 original compositions) represent an audio snapshot of the band, and is an accurate representation of the band’s live sound in a relaxed setting. The ensemble is filled out on various cuts by the barrelhouse piano of Neil Thomas and the B3 organ of Bruce Martin, longtime friends and collaborators
