As part of our JSJBF “outreach programming,” we’re extending our reach to the Mississippi Delta! We’ve created a MS Delta/Jersey Shore partnership – with perhaps some of us wondering why we haven’t done this before! We’ve all heard the famous Muddy Waters quote: “The blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll.” What better way to celebrate the offspring, the fantastic Jersey Shore rock ‘n’ roll sound, than to honor its roots! We’ll be doing exactly that on Friday, June 2 when Clarksdale, Mississippi’s finest, Anthony “Big A” Sherrod & the Allstars take the stage at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre on the Monmouth University campus
“Big A” has been called the torchbearer for the Clarksdale/Mississippi Delta sound, carrying on the tradition of the many artists who came before him. According to Roger Stolle, owner of Cat Head Delta Blues store, “Big A plays without a set list, in the old ‘house party, juke joint style.’” Quoted in Living Blues Magazine, Stolle proclaimed, “There’s no one else of Anthony’s generation who has learned first-hand from and/or played with the last of the older generation who are gone now … he knows where the music came from.”
We’re thrilled to co-produce this event with the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music – and look forward to what promises to be a terrific night of music & conversation with our Delta guests. Opening for “Big A” will be local blues legend “Stringbean.”
