October 20th was the inaugural date for the new jazz jam hosted by board member Jay Sweet at Icarus Brewing in Point Pleasant. Our first foray in Ocean County, the Barrel Room at Icarus Brewing proved to be an ideal place to start. Jay on upright bass, along with Dan Weeks on drums, and Charlie Clarke on the keyboard kicked thinks off. They were then joined by a succession of fine players, including Brandon Yankitis, a Sweet Music Academy student and JSJBF member Walter Dobrentz on drums, as well as new member, vocalist Dawn Lorentz. A crowd of friends and family enjoyed some excellent music, a few beers, and in some cases, a burger from Burger 25 next door. I had one, and it was very good, as was the beer!
The jam will be held every other Tuesday from 6-9pm. Jazz musicians from beginners to experts are welcome, along with those of us who are just looking for a relaxing setting where some of the best craft beer in the state is available, with some great jazz to listen to.
