McLoones Supper Club was once again the site for the Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues annual holiday party, and what a party it was. A full house of our music loving community saw an impressive set by the David O’Rourke quartet, featuring one of last year’s scholarship recipients, Andrew Abboud on electric guitar, along with Andy McDonagh on the keyboard and guest guitarist Seth Abramson with David on acoustic.

After the introduction of the JSJBF Board, and a short tribute to our dearly departed member, Jeff Bavaro, Sonny Kenn and Friends took the stage. Long time bassist Chris Plunkett was there, but his drummer, Vic Bayers was out with back issues, and Jerry Gaskill did an admirable job holding down the beat. Also, guitarist George Evans, spent his Sunday in the hospital with kidney stones, an experience I know all too well. I am happy to report that both of them are doing much better. The “Friends” on this date were two of the best horn players at the Jersey Shore, or anywhere else for that matter, Tommy LaBella on sax, and Steve Jankowski on Trumpet. Several special guests got up during the evening to join in, including Gary Neuwirth on harp, Sharon Lasher, and Lori Lust on vocals. They covered much musical territory, including some holiday songs, as only Sonny can do. It was a magical combination of performers, and those in attendance, creating a night of the music that showed why Asbury Park has become the music destination it is today.

Holiday Express, Guitar Winner, & Volunteer of the Year
In addition to recapping the Foundation’s year and having a great time, a substantial number of items requested by Holiday Express were collected and brought to their headquarters the next day. They will be distributed to those in need during the remainder of Holiday Express events.
During the break between sets, Sonny pulled the winning guitar raffle ticket, but the winner Joan Parente was not present.
We also recognize the Volunteer of the Year at this time, but Jack Piccolomini was unable to attend. Fortunately, he runs the monthly blues jam at the Chubby Pickle, and Joan was going to be there as well, so both presentations were done the next night.
