Reckless Steamy Nights has Returned to the Woman’s Club of Red Bank
The last Friday in July was one of the most pleasant in recent memory and made for a very enjoyable night for those who ventured out to the Anthony Reckless estate (164 Broad St, Red Bank), known for the last hundred years as the Red Bank Women’s Club. They were there to see The Me and Bobby D Band, a group that had packed Marlin’s Café in Point Pleasant a year and a half earlier for our last membership meeting before the pandemic. The crowd was treated to a wonderful night of music and some funny stories as well.
The band is rooted in the Blues but integrates rock, soul, and Americana in their far-reaching repertoire. Bobby Donofrio on lead guitar and vocals has been a fixture on the local music scene for more than forty years and plays with the economy of the seasoned veteran that he is. Kelly Dewkett has a voice that lends itself to the sweet sounds of John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” and then can do justice to a song like “Proud Mary.” She is also an excellent guitarist in her own right. Dawn Hopkins, a nationally ranked Women’s Professional Billiards Association player, is the force on the bass guitar as well as handling some of the vocals. Her partner in rhythm, Sal Albanese, on drums is also a veteran of many national touring acts during his forty plus years behind the skins. In addition to his solid playing, he had the audience laughing out loud with his stories. At one point, he told us that he was also a song writer but he couldn’t understand why the band didn’t like his song titles, one being “My wife Ran Away with My Best Friend, and I Really Miss Him!” Last but certainly not least, Barry Packin, plays rhythm guitar and is the leader of this excellent unit.
Reckless Steamy Nights will be off for August, with both Jazz & Blues by the Sea and the Sunday night finally of Bands by the Beach on that last weekend of the month. We will be back on September 24th with Peter V & Blues Train for a special CD release party. Hope you can join us for another memorable night of the best Jazz and Blues the Jersey Shore has to offer.
