The Outcrops – An Outstanding Rock Formation

An interview with a Jersey Blues-Infused Rock & Roll band, The Outcrops

Tina LoBosco spoke with Cassidy Rain to discuss her band, The Outcrops and how it all began.

Tell us how the band came together.

Bryan and I started the band as a throw-together garage band when he switched from drums to guitar and was looking for an outlet there. I was going to a lot of open mics playing solo at the time and having a band was a pipedream for me at that point! We met the other guys in the band through the local music scene.

Who are your biggest influences?

As a band, I think we look to bands like The Meters, the Band, the Grateful Dead… I know for me, seeing the Allman Brothers play at Peach Festival in 2013 completely changed the way I looked at playing music. I went from playing indie music to blues and rock n’ roll very quickly. Vocally, I really try to stay true to my own voice.

What’s the craziest thing that has happened while performing?

There have been a slew of things! I often recall the crazy insect invasions at our outdoor shows. We played a vintage motorcycle & music festival in upstate NY where a moth flew in my mouth while I was singing– I had to spit it out mid-song and keep singing. Another time at a show last September, we were playing next to a swamp and a swarm of bugs took over the stage for the last set making it almost impossible to play.

What is your creative process like?

It really varies from day to day and song to song for me. Sometimes, I put myself in another’s shoes to write a song. I am often inspired by going to see other musicians play, especially when they are playing original music that moves me. Driving down country roads on a beautiful day with music playing works too!

If you had a choice, what artist would you love to open for?

Out of anyone out there right now, I would love to open for Taj Mahal.

Anything else that you would like to add?

We look forward to doing more shows with JSJBF this year!
