The JSJBF Education Program plays an important role in fulfilling the mission of the JSJBF which is “to preserve, promote and perpetuate Jazz and Blues music in the northern New Jersey shore region through performance and education”

The Education Committee is achieving the Foundation’s goals through our JSJBF Community Outreach Programs such as the Jazz and Blues Youth Project, a mentorship program for young musicians ages 12-18, and Jazz and Blues in the Schools, a program that transcends the title and spills out into all services and facilities of the community.

JSJBF members who serve on the Education Committee volunteer their time and educational/musical backgrounds to formulate new programs and expand on existing ones. The members realize the importance of preserving, teaching and passing on the traditions and rich history of Jazz and Blues.

Jazz 'n' Blues in the Schools Program

This hour long program on the subject of Jazz and Blues is for everyone, young and old alike. We'll take you through some general history of Jazz or Blues in a program of lecture, live music and audience participation.

JERSEY SHORE JAZZ & BLUES FOUNDATION'S

JAZZ & BLUES YOUTH PROJECT

Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation (JSJBF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation whose mission is to Preserve, Promote, and Perpetuate Jazz and Blues in the northern New Jersey shore region through PERFORMANCE and EDUCATION.

The bi-weekly Jazz & Blues Youth Project in began September 12, 2006. Time of sessions are 7pm -9pm at the Red Bank Woman's Club, 164 Broad St., Red Bank, NJ (across from the post office). Registration for the year is $15, and is due at sign-up. This fee also includes a student membership in the the JSJBF for a year.

PROJECT SESSION DATES ARE:

Registration is Tuesday, September 16th, 2008. Sessions continue every second Tuesday after that, from 7-9 pm at the Red Bank Woman's Club

The Foundation Youth Project is designed to further nurture the skills that young musicians already possess, with an emphasis on jazz and blues.

Each session, students gain knowledge from a professional jazz or blues musician or singer. The seasoned pros share and pass along their experience of jazz and blues to the students. The sessions utilize classic jazz and blues songs so that the students can hone their own style of playing. Some of the songs may sound familiar to them, but new ones are introduced continuously, increasing their repertoire.

An understanding of jazz and blues is fostered through the process of playing, listening and arranging. The jam sessions have students constantly working on songs, specific techniques, and more importantly, working as an ensemble. The program cultivates teamwork.

Because of the diversity of age and level of playing ability, the more knowledgeable and proficient student players can mentor the younger students or less accomplished. This aspect of the program enables them to share with each other what they have learned and experienced, bringing their own individual style into the mix to make this music last.

Past Jazz & Blues Youth Project members have already performed at the 2005 and 2006 Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival and the 2006 Point Pleasant Concert in the Park Series, 2006 Freehold Cruisin' Car Show at the Centre Playhouse Theatre, and the Howell Day 2006, JSJBF's Holiday Party at the Stony Pony, and in 2007, Howell Library and Senior Community, Special Performances with Guest Mentor and Educator, TJ Wheeler, 2007 Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival's Main Stae and Harbour Experienace Stage and many community service performances.
